NYCC 2012 Gaming Panel Guide

NYCC is less than a day away and, if you’re like me, you’ll want to have a plan set up to get yourself into all the panels you’re interested in. Take a look below at some of the video game panels that have piqued our interest here at Kabooooom!

THURSDAY OCT. 11th

Games and Learning (12:15 pm – 1:15 pm)
Official Description: Meet with top educators who are using video games to help children learn. The panel will host Game Designers, Educational Leaders and Teachers to discuss the merits of games and education. It will also show practical uses for how games can be used in the classroom to stimulate learning and ideas among all ages of children.
Why We Like It: Take a chance to learn more about the practical uses of video games and how they can be applied towards education!

Bring Your Idea Into the Game (2:45 pm – 3:45 pm)
Official Description:
Helping professionals get the tools in hand to bring their game design ideas into a reality. Representatives from various software and hardware companies will be on hand to discuss how to develop your games. The panel will have a huge focus on independent game design and launching a finished game.
Why We Like It: Anyone interested in game design should attend this panel to try and find out if that line of work is for them. This panel is interesting to me especially since I just finished reading reading Anna Anthropy’s Rise of the Videogame Zinesters. Anthropy’s main focus is that all gamers should create a game to relate their experiences to one another and this panel seems like it could help out any aspiring designers.

Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Celebration (5:15 pm – 6:15 pm)

How to Get a Job in the Video Game Industry with Capcom (12:15 pm – 1:15 pm)
Official Description:
Moderator Francis Mao (CAPCOM) leads a panel of industry insiders from a variety of game companies and industry outlets to share with you how they got to “play video games for a living,” and the wide assortment of career paths that are available so you don’t have to be a programming whiz or a stellar digital artist in order to have a fun career in the video game industry. Hear about what job opportunities are available in areas such as such as Marketing, Public Relations, Retail, Design, Publishing, Editorial and more! There will be a Q&A session plus an opportunity to speak with and network one-on-one with the panelists after the session.
Why We Like It: Who doesn’t want to find out what it takes to work in the video game industry? Like the Breaking In Panel that Marvel has at every convention, this will let us gain an insight into how people got themselves working in the industry they’re passionate about.

Dark Horse Presents: Yoshitaka Amano (1:45 pm – 2:45 pm)

Persona 4: The Animation (Anime Network) (2:45 pm – 3:45 pm)
Official Description: The hit Playstation 2 role playing game comes to life in Persona 4: The Animation! Join the enigmatic Yu Narukami and his friends as they venture into another world in order to solve the mysterious disappearances and murders occurring around the small town of Inaba. Each new “player” in the story must first conquer their inner demons before tasting the immense powers of their own Personas, physical manifestations of their greatest strengths.
Why We Like It: Fans of the JRPG will want to see how it translates into an animated series. It should also provide a great jumping on point for anyone who hasn’t played the supernatural role-playing game!

The World of Capcom! (4:15 pm – 5:15 pm)
Official Description: CAPCOM returns to NYCC with another stellar lineup of the hottest new video game titles in the coming year! Moderator Francis Mao (CAPCOM) leads a panel of Capcom’s producers and product managers to share trailers and sneak peeks of all the hot, new upcoming CAPCOM games featuring Resident Evil 6, DmC, Lost Planet 3, Street Fighter X Tekken (PS Vita), Okami HD, Remember Me and more! Plus, a few surprises! Followed by a Q&A session.
Why We Like It: Capcom’s line-up has some pretty interesting games featured, such as DmC and Remember Me, and and you’ll get a chance to ask any questions you have for the producers!

Meteor Entertainment Presents HAWKEN (6:45 pm – 7:45 pm)
Official Description: HAWKEN is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2012. Meet the creative team behind the transmedia phenomenon taking the industry by storm, and enjoy exclusive glimpses of the free-to-play first person mech shooter game, their graphic novel with Archaia, and their exciting new ventures in film and new media.
Why We Like It: We’ve heard a bit about this free-to-play fps but the fact that it’s also a mech shooter is intriguing! We’re suckers for giant robots.

SATURDAY OCT. 13th

Designing the Video Game Sequel to James Cameron’s ALIENS – Aliens: Colonial Marines and the Challenges of Scale and Canon (11:00 am – 12:00 pm)
Official Description: 27 years later, James Cameron’s highly successful sci-fi/horror spectacle ALIENS is getting a canonical sequel – in the form of a video game. Developer Gearbox Software will share insights into the exciting journey that developing Aliens: Colonial Marines has been – from diving deep into the ALIENS canon to updating the legacy and the challenges of telling a new story in a beloved franchise.
Why We Like It: It will be interesting to see what direction they take the series in. If you’re a long time fan of Aliens you won’t want to miss this!

Marvel Video Games (11:15 am – 12:15 pm)
Official Description: Get the latest scoop on upcoming blockbuster Marvel video games spanning all of today’s hottest platforms (sorry, ColecoVision!). Upcoming titles include Deadpool, Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth, Marvel Heroes, Marvel: War of Heroes and more, plus the latest additions to current releases like Avengers Alliance, Avengers Initiative, Marvel Pinball (new table announcement!), HeroClix Online, Super Hero Squad Online and The Amazing Spider-Man. And just what is Marvel XP? All this, plus questions from the audience – and maybe even some other surprises. Don’t miss out!
Why We Like It: The Amazing Spider-Man was a blast to play and with the Deadpool game on the horizon, Marvel video games have our attention.

Marvel Heroes – The Marvel MMO You’ve Been Waiting For (1:15 pm – 2:15 pm)

You do not want to miss this panel, True Believers!
Why We Like It: If you’re a fan of Diablo I and II you’re going to want to sit in on this panel to find out more about Marvel Heroes. What we’ve seen so far is interesting and the gameplay that was available at San Diego Comic-Con was addicting.

Neverwinter Adventure Zones: From Campaign Guide to MMO World (1:30 pm – 2:30 pm)
Official Description: Dungeons & Dragons! Neverwinter! Hosted by a team of creative leads and game developers, Perfect World Entertainment joins forces with Cryptic Studios and Wizards of the Coast to present the highly anticipated free action MMORPG, Neverwinter to New York Comic Con attendees. Why We Like It: Neverwinter is brought to life by the pen and paper campaigns that fueled the creation of modern RPG’s and fans of the genre should be interested in hearing more about this.

Blizzard Entertainment Publishing (2:45 pm – 3:45 pm)
Official Description: Love World of Warcraft, Diablo III and StarCraft II? Why We Like It: If you’re an avid WoW fan or just appreciate a good fantasy story you should find out what’s coming soon from Blizzard and get a chance to talk with their publishing program!

Halo 4: The Master Chief Returns and Multiplayer goes to Infinity (4:00 pm – 5:00 pm)

Why We Like It: Halo has been a staple in the gaming world since its introduction in 2001. Fans have been awaiting the next chapter in the series and are itching to jump into the new multiplayer next month.

Official Description: ABSOLUTION with live commentary, followed by a fan Q&A.
Why We Like It: Watch the interactive demo for the next Hitman game? Who doesn’t want to do that? Enjoy some assassination amidst the convention.

Capcom Presents: Remember Me (6:45 pm – 7:45 pm)
Official Description: Be the first to find out everything there is to know about Capcom’s latest and greatest franchise, Remember Me – an exciting, science-fiction, action-adventure game set in the near future of Neo-Paris where memories are remixed and erased. Hear about the development of the game from the creative team and see the latest gameplay footage for this 2013 game release. Followed by a Q&A session.
Why We Like It: The concept behind Remember Me is fascinating and the memory control aspect should create some very unique situations for the game’s main character. Fans of Total Recall may want to give this a chance.

Mass Effect The Movie: Paragon Lost (8:00 pm – 10:00 pm)
Official Description: Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is the animated prequel to Mass Effect 3 and follows the early career of Alliance Marine James Vega (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.). In Paragon Lost, Vega leads an elite Special Forces squad into battle against a mysterious alien threat known as The Collectors. Stationed at a colony in a remote star system, Vega and his soldiers must protect the civilians from a ruthless invasion determined to capture the population for unknown purposes. See the full movie in this special advance screening!
Why We Like It: If you’re interested in seeing what actually happened to Alliance Marine James Vega after your conversations with him in Mass Effect 3 this screening will shed light on the subject.

SUNDAY OCT. 14th

Lost Planet 3 (10:45 am – 11:45 am)
Official Description: LOST PLANET 3 releases early next year with a gripping new storyline that provides fans with untold truths from previous Lost Planet games. Set in the frozen tundra of E.D.N. III, the game takes the franchise back to its roots, making gamers rethink everything they thought they knew about it. Come find out the latest information about this much-anticipated game from the Lost Planet 3 development team and “Go Beyond Survival!” Followed by a Q&A session.
Why We Like It: Third person shooter mixed with mech battles. Seriously, we love robots.

NAMCO BANDAI Games and CyberConnect2 on Creating Japanese Games for the Western World (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm)
Official Description: Hideo Baba, producer of NAMCO BANDAI Games’ Tales of series, and Hiroshi Matsuyama, President and CEO of CyberConnect2, creators of the hit NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM series discuss the challenges and triumphs of creating traditional Japanese video games with a dedicated and passionate overseas fan base.
Why We Like It: Like the Final Fantasy XIII-2 panel at the convention last year, this panel focuses on Japanese games for westerners. It was engaging hearing about how they’re trying to garner support for their games from the westerner fan base and it will be appealing to hear about how the Tales series has been influenced by this.

Capcom presents DMC: The All-New Devil May Cry (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm)
Official Description: The Devil May Cry franchise is back with a complete reboot of the series. Detailing Dante’s early years and set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry retains the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have defined the iconic series. Come and witness Dante chain together combo after combo with panache as he dispatches the demonic spawn back to hell. See what the game has in store for you January 15, 2013. It’s time to “Face Your Demons” Followed by a Q&A session.
Why We Like It: The reboot of Devil May Cry has received widespread attention and this panel should cement whether or not some fans will be purchasing the game come January.

Sleeping Dogs – Behind the Scenes, Plus World’s First Look at New Content (1:15 pm – 2:15 pm)
Official Description:
United Front Games and Square Enix London Studios personally invite you to join them for an exclusive look at the past, present and future of Sleeping Dogs, the community-championed hit videogame of the summer. The game’s creators will also give a world exclusive showing of Sleeping Dogs’ first major game-extending story add-on pack. The team will share their thoughts on the game’s reception by both professional critics and the videogames community. Come for the Q&A, stay for the stage demo, this promises to be an unmissable insight into the game’s development process.
Why We Like It: Sleeping Dogs was a bit hit this year and the first major add-on should provide fans with more time to spend in this open world action game.

Archie Action Hour: Sonic, Mega Man and Red Circle Comics (12:15 pm – 1:15 pm)
Official Description: Plug in, suit up and prepare for adventure! First, two video game icons collide in the I-can’t-believe-it’s-actually-happening Sonic/Mega Man comic book crossover event. You’d be crazier than Doctors Eggman and Wily combined to miss this follow up discussion where we dive right into it. The editorial mastermind behind both books, Paul Kaminski, is joined by Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito and writer Ian Flynn with more info about the biggest comic book event of the year as well as what’s on tap for Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, and Mega Man. See exclusive artwork, learn about upcoming story lines and get your questions answered by the team behind the two most popular video game comic series. Then, get all the details on the future of superhero comics—The New Crusaders! The digital-first series has made its way to print, and the Red Circle team are pumped to give you the rundown on where the series is headed, along with info about the upcoming Lost Crusade mini-series, in this action-packed panel. Why We Like It: This isn’t related to gaming directly but it has some of gaming’s most beloved characters. The focus on the panel is actually a childhood dream. SONIC AND MEGA MAN CROSSOVER.
