This Sunday, TNT’s highly acclaimed show, The Last Ship will return for its second season. To bring those of you who may have missed out season 1 up to speed, we’ve compiled here a brief recap of the show thus far.
The Last Ship follows the USS Nathan James, a NAVY destroyer commanded by Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) and his executive officer, Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin). While on a training exercise in the arctic, the Nathan James learns of an apocalyptic flu virus which has laid waste to the world and devastated its population.
On board the ship is a virologist Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) who works for the Center for Disease Control. Many episodes depict the destroyer traveling the globe, looking for supplies, picking up new allies – all the while Scott continues working on discovering a cure. Along the way, the Nathan James is also pursued by a Russian cruiser captained by a brilliant naval tactician.
After several confrontations with the Nathan James, it’s revealed that on board the Russian cruiser is the virus’ patient zero who is key to creating an vaccine. They have been seeking the Nathan James in order to steal flu samples that Dr. Scott had earlier procured. And during a fierce battle, the crew of the Nathan James severly damages the Russia vessel before escaping.
However, unbeknownst to the Nathan James, patient zero breaks out of containment aboard the sinking Russia cruiser and infects the whole crew before disappearing into the bowels of the ship.
Back on the Nathan James, Dr. Scott is able to create a working vaccine for the virus and the ship sets sail for the United States with the hope of manufacturing the vaccine on a large enought scale to save the world. Upon arriving they find a working government under the command of Amy Granderson (Alfre Woodard), vice-chair of the US President’s Defense Policy Board and highest-ranking of the White House staff still alive. With assistance from the remnants of the Maryland state police, she takes in the crew of the Nathan James and informs them of a problem with a resistance group that is attacking her government.
Yet after some investigation, Captain Chandler and his crew discover that Granderson has been luring the infected into Baltimore with rumors of a fake cure. Once there, she orders the infected to be euthanized and their bodies burned, which it turns out is how they’ve generated the government’s power grid and why the resistance has been trying to thwart her.
The Last Ship season 1 ends with Chandler and the crew of the Nathan James in terrible danger as they discover the real enemy never left home.
The Last Ship returns with season 2 this Sunday, June 21st on TNT at 9/8c.
