Season 2 of The Last Ship has so far crafted itself as more of a political thriller than a post-apocalyptic one, and this shifting of focus for the series has proven to be a strength of the show. Ending the virus angle early on allowed The Last Ship to move the narrative forward, leaving the disease in the background. While the Red Flu can and surely will rear its ugly head again in future seasons, right now it has taken a backseat to the depravity of the human condition.
The Last Ship‘s writers are slowly raising the stakes of the situation for the crew of the Nathan James. In the previous episode, the Nathan James was just about to gain its first major victory against the Cult of Immunes by taking over the FEMA base in New Orleans. The endeavor ended in disaster as the Immunes under Sean’s command butchered almost ten thousand of the survivors and used a spliced together video that frames Chandler and his crew as the killers.
In “Valkyrie,” Chandler and the crew of the Nathan James are desperate to find and end the transmissions from the Immunes, especially now that the main weapon Chandler intended to use against them (Niels) is dead. This episode did a fine job showing that not every battle in a war is one that involves guns and bullets, sometimes the greatest weapons are information and propaganda. Sean has, for most of the season, used media and information to raise awareness for his cause, while Chandler has used relied on his superior military training and weapons to defeat the Immunes. However, not unlike like a Hydra, for every member killed or captured, 50 more take their place due to the vast communication network Sean has set up. Chandler may be gaining followers by the dozens, but Sean is gaining them by the thousands
This episode was definitely one of the better ones of this season. Towards the end of the episode, “Valkyrie” treats audiences to a nice action sequences, one that reminds us that these characters we have grown to know over the season are not bulletproof, and death and injury are still very real threat.
With the season 2 finale coming, The Last Ship is drawing the battle lines for what will likely be a very exciting conclusion to the conflict between the Immunes and the Nathan James.
