COMICS Kabooooom is Excited for in 2016

At our core, Kabooooom is a comic book site. And at the core of our love for comics is a love for superheroes. Comics are far more than capes and cowls these days (thank goodness!), but it’s these epic, cosmic stories of heroes and villains that continue to make us most excited for the coming year. Here are the comics the Kabooooom crew is most looking forward too…

Sarah Moran

Looking Forward To: Legend of Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman Earth One, Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death, Batman, Black Canary, Harley Quinn, Harley’s Little Black Book, DC Comics Bombshells, Captain Marvel, A-Force, The Mighty Thor, Ms. Marvel, Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, Angela: Queen of Hel, Star Wars, Bitch Planet, Paper Girls, Pretty Deadly, Rat Queens, Saga, Sex Criminals, The Walking Dead, The Wicked + The Divine

Most Excited For: Aquaman/Justice League – Rise of the Seven Seas

For comics, my looking forward to list is comprised of everything that piqued my interest while looking through the solicitations for the next three months. That’s about as far a most publishers let us look into the future, so when thinking on what I’m most excited for in 2016, I recalled this tweet from writer Geoff Johns and I got all giddy. Johns’ run on Aquaman with Ivan Reis and Joe Prado during the early days of the New 52 was spectacular. Aquaman is a character I’ve always had a soft spot for, but under this creative team Aquaman – and perhaps more importantly, his wife Mera – became superstars.

I’ve kept current with Aquaman during John’s absence, against my better judgement at times, but knowing that the whole team is returning this year to finish what they only hinted at in Aquaman #25 – the “Rise of the Seven Seas” – I’ll continue to hang on a little longer. It still isn’t clear whether this arc will appear in either the Aquaman monthly, Justice League monthly, or both, but I’ll definitely be checking it out regardless.

In the meantime, the March solicit for Aquaman #50 (now under new writer Dan Abnett) teases the introduction of Aquawoman – a new character? A new role for Mera? Who knows! But I want to find out.

Matt Morrison

Looking Forward To: The Flash, Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris, Vampirella, Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor miniseries, Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor monthly series, Arrow: The Dark Archer

Most Excited For: Green Lantern Corps: Edge of Oblivion

I’ve been out of the Green Lantern comics for a while now. Following Geoff Johns’ legendary run was a tall order and while I think Robert Venditti did a fine job on the core title, I had no interest in buying four books to get one story – which was necessary at the time of Johns’ departure when The New Guardians and Red Lanterns were still being published. I’m reluctant to get back into that quagmire but with Tom Taylor writing a mini-series focused on The Corps and artwork by Ethan Van Sciver, how can I not give them another chance?

Brandon Griffin

Looking Forward To: Amazing Spider-Man, Invincible Iron-Man, Old-Man Logan, The Mighty Thor, All-New All-Different Avengers, The Astonishing Ant-Man, Guardians Of The Galaxy, Star-Lord, Spider-Man 2099, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, All-New X-Men, Extraordinary X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, All-New Wolverine, Obi-Wan And Anakin, Darth Vader, Star Wars, Batman, Justice League, Batman/TMNT, Detective Comics, Batman Europa, Batman And Robin Eternal

Most Excited For: Civil War II

Confession: I did not know the Civil War story arc had such a split community of reaction. I was under the impression that everybody loved it as much as me and my friends did. Whether you loved it or hated it, doing a second installment amidst the great Marvel relaunch is bold. This will be a big chance for characters in new roles, like Sam Wilson, to prove their worthiness of their newly adopted identities. It will also apparently be killing off a major hero (not Spidey again, thank god) which is pretty big news.

This is a great chance for fans to get a good look at some of the newer, lesser known heroes in potentially bigger roles. The original Civil War was one that I will never forget because it had some great comic book moments. Hopefully, Civil War II works just as well and isn’t simply trying to cash in on the name while tying into the new Captain America movie.

    1. I’m sorry about that! I probably wasn’t as clear as I could have been, and honestly, I didn’t even know what comics I was choosing until I start digging through solicitations. Feel free to add in more!
