Since taking on the task of tutoring university cafeteria worker Bill Potts, The Doctor has shown his pupil many wondrous things around the whole of Time and Space. Of course The TARDIS is rarely cooperative in taking The Doctor precisely when and where he wishes to travel. Such is the case when an attempt to visit King Henry III’s polar bear leads to an emergency landing in the middle of a Viking expedition.

Based on the sight of The TARDIS, the settlers are convinced that The Doctor and Bill are emissaries of the gods. It’s a conceit that The Doctor might normally be amused by if it weren’t for their hosts’ speaking of the omen preceding their arrival – two great stars falling to the ground in the distance…

There have been many things in the Tenth Series of Doctor Who that have reminded me of the Tom Baker era of the original show. This comic – the first to feature new companion Bill Potts – inspires similar comparisons.

Of course artist Brian Williamson illustrated the recent Fourth Doctor mini-series, perfectly capturing the Gothic horror aesthetic common to so many stories of the era. And Richard Dinnick’s script invites favorable comparison to Robert Holmes’ historical episodes, with comparable themes of science vs. superstition and the Vikings being torn on how far they can trust this “Doctor”.

Comparisons to the show aside, this is a fantastic comic. Every element – the story, the art, the colors – work together in perfect harmony. If you’re a Whovian who is going through withdrawals thinking of the long wait until this year’s Christmas special, you would do well to start reading this series.

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor: Year Three #5 will be available for purchase on July 12, 2017 from your local comic book store (Don’t know where that is? Here you go.) or digitally via Comixology.com.
