The good news is that The Doctor – last of the mysterious race of time-travelers known as The Time Lords – has found the source of the temporal disturbances that had been setting his teeth on edge for some time. The bad news is that the source was a being known as The Vortex Butterfly, who was revealed as a future version of Gabby Gonzales – one of The Doctor’s current companions! The Vortex Butterfly was apparently created after Gabby was driven mad by her development of block transfer computation powers – the ability to alter space and time through sheer force of will.

It took everything The Doctor had to close off the future which led to The Vortex Butterfly’s creation. Now, in order to save reality and his companion, The Doctor has entrusted Gabby to the famous artist Zhe – an old friend with the same power, who uses it to create her masterpieces. He’s also promised to stay by Gabby’s side until she has control of her abilities – a promise which is taxing his patience to the limit, as The Doctor does not do well staying in one place for long.

The Doctor will soon be called to action once again. Even now, multiple crises brew in the lives of his friends, from the replacement of a wife with some manner of doppelganger to a threat that will erase The Earth from existence! The Doctor will gladly lend a hand, of course, but will Gabby understand when The Doctor seemingly abandons her for several very good reasons?

Fans who have been enjoying Titan Comics’ Tenth Doctor series with love this first chapter of “The Good Companion”. Everyone else, however, may be a bit lost. Such is the double-edged sword of this series’ plotting under writer Nick Abadzis, who has built upon the mythology of the original television series to create his own rich epic. The story here is well-built and well-written, but this comic is completely inaccessible to those who have not been reading the tale of Gabby Gonzales since Year One.  Matched with the artwork of Giorgia Sposito and the colors of Adele Matera, it is still a great book. Just don’t expect to be able to jump into this one easily as a new reader.

Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Three #11 will be available for purchase on November 22, 2017 from your local comic book store (Don’t know where that is? Here you go.) or digitally via Comixology.com.
