VOID TRIP #1 [Advance Review]

Void Trip #1 Cover
VOID TRIP #1/ Script by RYAN O’SULLIVAN/ Art by PLAID KLAUS/ Letters by ADITYA BIDIKAR/ Published by IMAGE COMICS

Ana and Gabe are the last two humans alive in their galaxy.

They are also, in no particular order, unwashed, foul-smelling, morally-questionable, stoned to the bone, fuel-stealing, froot-sucking, space-hippies and/or trouble.

They are also pilgrims of a sort, seeking the promised land called Euphoria – a world that is, as the name implies, paradise. Or at least paradise as defined by a bunch of psychedelic froot-eaters like Ana and Gabe.

The problem is that as they seek Euphoria, so does something else seek them. Whether it is for their past crimes of due to their being humans is unclear. Either way Gabe and Ana are in even more trouble than usual. And that is saying something.

Still, with a bit of luck and a little help from their friends, Ana and Gabe might just make it. At least, as soon as Gabe convinces Ana to let the navicomp actually try and find Euphoria instead of just trusting the journey to take them there eventually. Or at least talks her into not trying to navigate while high on froot.

The Void Trip is what you might get if you crossed a Cheech and Chong movie with The Odyssey and set it in space. There’s not a lot to Ryan O’Sullivan’s script in this first issue apart from a lot of stoner humor. Thankfully, it’s pretty funny stoner humor, but Ana and Gabe are pretty flat as characters so there’s little sense of urgency to their quest. The artwork by Plaid Klaus is fantastic, with an amazing use of color and some eye-catching character designs. Science-fiction fans looking for something different may find this to be a Trip worth taking, provided you don’t expect Robert Heinlein.

The Void Trip #1 will be available for purchase on November 22, 2017 from your local comic book store (Don’t know where that is? Here you go.) or digitally via Comixology.com.
