DOCTOR WHO: DOOM’S DAY #1/ Written by JODY HOUSER/ Art by ROBERTA INGRANATA/ Colors by WARNIA K. SAHADEWA/ Letters by RICHARD STARKINGS & COMICRAFT’S JIMMY BETANCOURT/ Published by TITAN COMICS
With the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who fast approaching, there is a lot in the works. The opening salvo is Doom’s Day – a multimedia event which started with a webcast video that introduced the world to Doom – the Universe’s Greatest Assassin!
The Doom’s Day comic explains the scenario for those who missed the above video. Someone has sent Death – literal Death – after the surprisingly cheerful and upbeat Doom because of some past offense. Doom’s only hope of cheating Death is finding The Doctor.
Unfortunately, her first jaunt in time takes her to that incarnation of The Master known as Missy, who is currently masquerading as The Doctor while playing at being a hero. Confused? So is Missy.
The confusion continues as Doom’s journey has her seeing to some business while she searches for The Doctor. Because Death hunting you is no excuse not to do your job.

Introducing Doom through Missy is a brilliant conceit. Beyond tying the story to the excellent Doctor Who: Missy mini-series, it also allows us the chance to equate the two characters as worthy foes to one another and, presumably, The Doctor eventually. Roberta Ingranata’s artwork is excellent as always and Jody Houser pushes the comedic aspects of murder and mayhem, with Missy getting a true taste of what it is like to be The Doctor as she follows Doom’s trail of destruction and tries not to admire it.
I’m not sure where this story is going but I don’t much care. Doom’s Day is a wild, fun ride and a splendid kick-off for a promising Doctor Who event.
Doctor Who: Doom’s Day #1 releases on July 5, 2023.
