It’s after The Last Great Time War. Or possibly before, depending on where and when you stand.

Regardless, the war has ended. The genocidal aliens known as The Daleks were seemingly destroyed along with The Time Lords of Gallifrey, who once protected the whole of Time from interference by outside forces. All of them gone in an instant, save for one survivor.

Ironically, this one survivor was The Daleks’ greatest enemy among The Time Lords. The one they dubbed “The Oncoming Storm” in their legends. But he was known among The Time Lords and to most of the universe as The Doctor.

The Doctor was a renegade, who forsook the Time Lord oath of non-interference to travel the universe helping those in need. He continued his wanderings after The Time War, nearly meeting his end on the planet Earth at the hands of his old enemies, The Autons. He was saved by a shop-girl named Rose Tyler, whom he allowed to join him.

They later made the acquaintance of Captain Jack Harkness – an amnesic ex-Time Agent from the 51st century, whose roguish exterior hid a heart of gold. Jack impressed The Doctor enough to earn an invitation to join them on The TARDIS. The trio have gone on to have many exciting adventures since then.

They are just finishing up one such adventure when The TARDIS receives an odd broadcast. The audio is unclear but the figure on the video is quite clearly Jack Harkness in his old uniform. They follow the signal, hoping to find some answers behind Jack’s edited memories. Unfortunately, all they find is a greater mystery and a world where The Doctor (or someone very much like him) is worshiped as a celebrity!

9D_Series_01_PREVIEW9D_Series_01_PREVIEW29D_Series_01_PREVIEW3Titan Comics’ success streak in adapting the adventures of Doctor Who for the comics’ page continues with this new monthly series. Cavan Scott, who wrote the excellent Ninth Doctor mini-series from several months ago, continues to do an excellent job capturing the essence of the characters portrayed by Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper and John Barrowman.  You can hear their voices in your head as you read this issue!

The artwork is largely fine but suffers from some minor imperfections. Adriana Melo generally does a good job capturing the likenesses of The Ninth Doctor and Captain Jack, but there’s something off about her take on Rose Tyler, who does not resemble Billie Piper much beyond being a blonde woman with green eyes! Thankfully, she’s skilled in the arts of blocking an action sequence. And the color art by Matheus Lopes is, to quote The Doctor, fantastic!

All in all, fans of The Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler and Captain Jack Harkness will find this comic to be a satisfying continuation of their adventures.
