This Week’s Must Read: The Woods Vol. 1 The Arrow

You’d imagine with a gig reviewing comics I’d have read every issue of every series that caught my interest. Well, you’d be wrong. Plenty of great stuff happens to slip by before I get the chance to read it. Case in point, The Woods by James Tynion IV and Michael Dialynas. Basically, it’s about an entire school’s population – students, teachers, staff, all of them – who on one day find themselves lightyears away from home on an alien world. Intriguing, right? Its first four issues are out today in this collected trade, but after you catch up, grab issue #5 which is also out today!

This Week’s Must Read: Grayson Future’s End #1

The Grayson title has hardly had time to get off the ground, yet we are given a view five years into the future as Dick and Helena find a role to play in the ever-changing landscape of the DCU. Even though it’s only two issues in, I’ve enjoyed Tim Seeley’s work. He helps Tom King plot this issue, so I’m expecting it to be just as entertaining.

This Week’s Must Read: Arrow Season 2.5 #1

For all the things it did right, the first Arrow digital series was severely limited by needing to tie in – however vaguely – to each week’s episode. This new series, meant to bridge the gap between the last season and the upcoming season 3, will have a good deal more freedom and should allow the writers to cut loose from the limits of a television series budget. And with scripts by show executive producer (and current X-Men author) Marc Guggenheim, this series promises to maintain the tone of the show while still being an enjoyable action-packed comic.

This Week’s Must Read: Grendel vs. The Shadow #1

A new Grendel story by legendary writer/artist Matt Wagner is always cause for celebration. This time out, Wagner brings original Grendel persona Hunter Rose face-to-face with Lamont Cranston aka The Shadow! Wagner’s Hunter Rose stories have often utilized 1930s motifs–the elegance of Fred Astaire movies mixed with the violence of pulp novels and film noir. Pairing Grendel with one of the era’s most famous adventure heroes sounds like a good fit. What happens when The Shadow strikes an equally dark anti-hero (or is it villain?) in Hunter Rose? This unexpected match-up looks to explore.
