This Week’s Must Read: Zodiac Starforce #1

I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Zodiac Starforce #1, and though I never found the time to review it (because I’m a terrible, no good, slug of a person), I knew I’d be including it as my must read for the week. This title promises to be a real blast, pulling most obviously from the classic anime series Sailor Moon (look closely at the panels for a few cameos), but also includes elements from your typical high school comedies. Kevin Panetta introduces us to the team slowly over the course of the issue, yet though context it quickly becomes clear that the girls haven’t suited up as Zodiac Starforce recently, having previously beaten their nemesis and presumably saved the world.

But there’s a new evil about to bring the team back together, forcing these friends to face why they stopped hanging out all together. It’s magical girl action combined with teen friendship drama and it all looks wonderful thanks to Paulina and Savanna Ganucheau. Zodiac Starforce is bright and colorful, invoking the look of shows like Jem or Power Rangers but with a contemporary style. Each member of Starforce has a distinct personality, and like any good team story those distinctions are clearly depicted by their attire and attitude. Zodiac Starforce #1 hits the ground running and doesn’t let up through all its 32 pages. And as you can tell by how my weekly Pull List entry turned into a mini-review, this one comes highly recommended.

This Week’s Must Read: Ant-Man: Last Days #1

I’ve been actively avoiding Marvel’s Secret Wars and all of the one-shot tie-ins. I have little interest in crossovers on a good day and the base concept of Secret Wars sounded like more of the same-old, same-old. And yet – for the creative team involved – I’m willing to give this Ant-Man book a shot. Nick Spencer’s scripts are always good for a laugh or three and Ramon Rosanas is one of the most underrated artists in the field today.

This Week’s Must Read: Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #4

So this is the only Marvel title I feel is worthy of any notice this week. This is a smart limited series within the Secret Wars storyline written by Cullen Bunn. Bunn has been crafting Deadpool stories (The Deadpool Killology) for a while now and every time he does, he finds an entertaining and complex scenario to test Deadpool. In this series, Deadpool is actually running around the world of the original Secret Wars, mucking up history. So far Bunn and artist Matteo Lolli have captured the atmosphere of the original story, yet found ways to shock and entertain new and old fans alike.
