MOVIES Kabooooom is Excited for in 2016

This year promises to be a big one not only for comic book movies but science fiction, too. That’s roughly been the trend in Hollywood of late, and being that we here at Kabooooom are bunch of comic book, sci-fi-loving nerds, our choices for the movies we’re most excited to see in 2016 should come as no surprise. Drumroll, please.

Looking Forward To: Deadpool, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Hail, Caesar!, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse, Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, Ghostbusters, Star Trek Beyond, Gambit, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them, Assassin’s Creed, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Most Excited For: Suicide Squad

I make no secret of being a huge fan of Harley Quinn. She’s a character who’s very dear to me, possibly because she debuted in my absolute favorite version of the Batman mythos or simply because something about the kooky, hapless clown who tries to do right but is so often in the wrong struck a chord with me. However, since her debut poor Harls has been through the ringer when it comes to her characterization – some versions strike that balance between gung-ho gal and doormat, others don’t.

For as many Marvel movies as I’m looking forward to in 2016, I’m a DC fangirl at heart. Yet, I was not a fan of Man of Steel and have little enthusiasm for Batman V Superman. But Suicide Squad is introducing Harley Quinn to the masses and it’s important to me they get it right. And there’s every chance Suicide Squad turns out to be a huge disappointment, but even if it is, I’m hopeful Harley isn’t the reason. David Ayer isn’t Zack Snyder and everything I’ve seen of Margot Robbie – from her role in The Wolf on Wall Street, to the Suicide Squad trailer, to even her pose in the above image – makes me with confidant she was the perfect choice for cinema’s first Harley Quinn. (The movie is also releasing on my birthday so I’m going to be majorly bummed if it sucks.)

Looking Forward To: The 5th Wave, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War, Ghostbusters, Doctor Strange
Most Excited For: Deadpool

I don’t like Deadpool, as a general rule. He started off as a Deathstroke rip-off because Rob Liefeld is a hack. And while Joe Kelly did a lot to change the character into something more amusing, I think the joke of a reality-breaking anti-hero was funnier when Keith Giffen told it with Ambush Bug. I think Wade is horribly overexposed, most of his comics aren’t that funny and he gives cosplayers an excuse to act rude for the sake of “playing the character”.

That being said… I want to see this movie after the red-band trailer. And I think Deadpool is ultimately the most important superhero movie to be coming out this year. Like the character or hate him, 20th Century Fox and Ryan Reynolds are going out of their way to make sure this movie is true to the spirit of the comics on every level. If this movie is a success, it will prove that there is an audience for R-rated superhero movies, comedic superhero movies and something to be said for listening to the fandom and giving them what they want. I may not like the movie but I am interested to see what the aftermath inspires.

Obviously, I really like movies based on comic book characters. All of these movies have me excited for one reason or the other, but Deadpool makes me feel the most warm and tingly. Deadpool maybe one of the most versatile characters in the Marvel Universe, so that could be a problem transferring him to the screen. Though the fact that Deadpool is Marvel’s first R-rated movie makes me confident Tim Miller and company are going to get the characterizations right, and that Ryan Reynolds will help us all forget whatever went on in that first Wolverine movie.

Looking Forward To: Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Zootopia, Doctor Strange, Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zoolander 2, Ratchet & Clank, Everybody Wants Some, TMNT 2, The Revenant, Gambit, Mojave, The Conjuring II
Most Excited For: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

We live in the most exciting time in human history for many reasons, but my number one is how spoiled we Star Wars fanatics will be going forward. Rogue One is a huge test as it will be the first Star Wars spin-off movie, telling the tale of how the Rebels acquired the plans to the Death Star before the events of A New Hope. It won’t be as monumental as The Force Awakens, but hopefully it will keep us occupied enough as we wait another year for Episode VIII.
