This Week’s Must Read: Wonder Woman Earth One Vol. 1

There’s every chance this book will be a disaster. Grant Morrison is generally a pretty enjoyable writer, and has crafted some genuine classics in the past. Yet, I can’t help but be a little concerned about his approach to Wonder Woman in this novel, what with the emphasis on bondage and a sexually voracious Amazon society – a concept, mind you, I’m not necessarily opposed to, I’m simply concerned it’ll read too much like some male fantasy than a true depiction of a fully realized society of women. Still, there’s no denying Yanick Paquette’s artwork looks gorgeous. For that alone, Wonder Woman Earth One is surely worth checking out, no matter what weird tale Morrison spins.

This Week’s Must Read: Adventures of Supergirl #6 (Digital)

Even if you’re not a fan of the Supergirl TV series, this Digital First comic is well worth your time if you’ve ever had any love for the Maid Of Might. Sterling Gates’ scripts perfectly capture the spirit of the show – no surprise, given that Gates’ original run on Supergirl was perhaps the greatest single influence on the CBS series! Fans of the character will also want to check this issue out because the artist on this issue – Emanuela Lupacchino – will be the regular artist on the DC Rebirth Superwoman series.

This Week’s Must Read: Black Panther # 1

There are numerous reasons to pick up the first issue of this new series run of Black Panther. In addition to gearing up for Captain America: Civil War and the characters appearance in his own film in–well two years, Black Panther #1 promises a strong story. The first arc, ‘A Nation Under Our Feet’ will follow T’Challa’s struggle with political unrest in Wakanda; a social unrest fueled by a superhuman terrorist group, The People, who aim to challenge the country’s traditions. As Wakanda’s ruler and protector, The Black Panther must look towards a better future if he wants his beloved nation to survive. And though Black Panther is tackling such a heavy-hitting concept, this title is written by National Book and MacArthur Genius award-winning author, Ta-Nehisi Coates with accompanying art from art icon, Brian Stelfreeze. Their run on Black Panther will surely be one to watch out for and pay attention to in the coming months.
