After the Earth-That-Was got all used up, humanity took to The Black to find new places to homestead. Even with the technology to terraform whole planets, people were still people and eventually a war was fought over how to run things. In the end, The Alliance – who favored ruling all worlds through a centralized system – won out over The Independents a.k.a. The Browncoats. After the war was over, former Browncoats and war-buddies Malcolm Reynolds and Zoe Washburne bought a ship together, which Mal named Serenity.

Since that time, the Serenity has been used to run odd-jobs of varying degrees of legality, with Zoe as First Mate and Mal as Captain. The rest of the crew is made up of mercenary Jayne Cobb, mechanic Kaylee Frye, physician Simon Tam, former member of the Companion’s Guild Inara Serra and psychic/prodigy/escaped test-subject River Tam. They also have a new addition to the crew – Zoe’s baby daughter, Emma.

Most of the crew were outlaws even before the incident where they publicly exposed one of The Alliance’s great crimes – their accidental creation of the cannibalistic space pirates known as The Reavers. Since that time, the folk on-board Serenity have been trying to maintain a low profile. Partly because of The Alliance holding a grudge. Partly because of a burgeoning but disorganized resistance movement that wants to make Malcolm Reynolds their leader.

Mal hates The Alliance, of course, but he’s also disinclined to reignite a war he considers long over. All he cares about is finding jobs, keeping his ship in the air and keeping Inara in his bed – not necessarily in that order.  Trouble is that their newfound high-profile is making it hard to find the kind of high-paying dodgy work the crew is used to handling and tensions are mounting among the crew. A message from an old friend provides a welcome distraction from their problems, but – as usual – it seems like the Serenity crew have more trouble than they know…

Serenity: No Power In The ‘Verse #1 will prove a welcome treat for those loyal Browncoats still holding out hope for a second season over a decade after the cult-hit series’ cancellation. Writer Chris Roberson (best known for creating the original iZombie comics that inspired the hit CW show) has a clear grasp on the wide cast of characters and finds the perfect balance of action, comedy and humor throughout this first issue. The artwork by Georges Jeanty, Karl Story and Wes Dzioba is appropriately gritty, capturing the aesthetic of the original show perfectly. It may not win any converts over to the Browncoat cause, but the fandom will love this mini-series for what it is.
