THE PULL LIST, 1.4.17

Here at Kaboooooom we love our comic books, but if you’re new to the game or just don’t frequent the local comic shop, it can be hard to know where to start. For that, we’re here to help. Every week we’ll share with you our recommendations for what you should be checking out and what you need to know before you crack that cover – it’s The Pull List!

Back in the day (of 2012), Marvel relaunched Hawkeye with Matt Fraction and David Aja.  It was a hit, giving Clint Barton a fun, modern series to complement his big screen debut in The Avengers. It also co-starred Kate Bishop (and Lucky the Pizza Dog) and helped establish Kate as her own Hawkeye (and Clint as just the Hawkguy). Kate then joined  another fantastic series, Young Avengers from Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie (who you may know better as co-creators of The Wicked + The Divine), in where she palled around with Ms. America, Marvel Boy, Kid Loki and was just generally a bad ass.

Since then, I lost track of what Kate has been up to in the Marvel Universe (was she even involved in all that Civil War II nonsense?), but I’m checking back in with her through this new series. Written by Kelly Thompson with art from Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire, this latest Marvel NOW Hawkeye series finds Kate starting her own P.I. business in Venice Beach, CA, combining her superhero-ing with her detective skills (à la Jessica Jones). The first issue made sure to keep a lot of Kate’s trademark sass, but it also made sure to show her struggling as she starts out on her own. It’ll be tough for Kate (especially with so many bugger her about the real Hawkeye), but I’m looking forward to seeing her tackle this next chapter. (Plus, who doesn’t love a good pulp cover?)

This Week’s Must Read: The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #1

the fall and rise of captain atom 1 cvrI’ve never been a fan of Captain Atom. I am a fan of Cary Bates (one of the best Superman writers of all time!) and Greg Weisman (Young Justice: Season Three, on the way, baby!) who are writing this new Captain Atom book. Can two writers I love overcome my disdain for a character? We’ll find out this Wednesday!

Buy these comics at your local comic book store (Don’t know where that is? Here you go.), from Things From Another Universe, or digitally via Comixology.com.
