This Week’s Must Read: Batwoman Rebirth #1

Batwoman and I go way back. Not quite to her introduction to the DC Universe in the weekly series, 52, but not long after, when she headlined a run of Detective Comics by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III. It was that run — and especially William’s depiction of Batwoman’s striking design — that first drew me to a comic book store. It was through reading Batwoman’s origin, how Kate Kane was unceremoniously drummed out of the military for being a lesbian only to later fulfill her calling as Gotham City’s newest vigilante, that I became a comic book junkie, with my own pull at the local shop and overstuffed longboxes back at home.

Needless to say, she’s special to me, and now she’s again starring in what’s her third, I believe, solo series. Written by Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion IV, with artwork by Steve Epting and Jeremy Cox, Batwoman Rebirth #1 is the first chapter of her latest adventure. While Batwoman has been essential in the recent Detective Comics, proving herself every bit Batman’s equal, getting to enjoy Kate operating on her own is going to be a treat.

This Week’s Must Read: Green Arrow #17

The Emerald Outlaw storyline comes to a close and I can’t wait to see how it ends! While I’ve had some issues with the Rebirth of Green Arrow (chiefly how Black Canary seems to have become the impetus for Oliver Queen’s redemption rather than a self-driven desire to be a better man) this is still the best Green Arrow has been since the halcyon days of Kevin Smith and Phil Hester’s legendary run.

This Week’s Must Read: Captain America: Sam Wilson #19

Sam Wilson’s turn as Cap started off a bit rocky, but has recently been incredibly strong. Reflecting the current political climate and racist fan outrage, Nick Spencer has been crafting an intelligent and entertaining adventure. Sam Wilson is the actual embodiment of everything that Captain America is supposed to stand for — maybe even more so than Steve Rogers. With Secret Empire approaching and Hydra-Rogers taking over S.H.I.E.L.D., Sam will most definitely be playing an important role for Marvel.
