The Doctor is used to The TARDIS giving him a hard time about taking him where he wants to go. It has a distressing habit of taking him where he needs to be instead! And where he needs to be, apparently, is in the small American town of Sweet Haven.
It is here, shortly after the passing of a comet, that a giant smile appeared in the skies over Sweet Haven. More disturbingly, The Smile shot out rays of light that turned the people hit by the rays into savage monsters, ready to rip-apart their friends and family!
Seeking shelter with a diner waitress named Penny and what passes for “The Law” in a town like Sweet Haven, The Doctor is cut off from The TARDIS and short on options. But that won’t stop him from trying to sort it all out!
The Boy With The Displaced Smile proves an unexpected interlude from the story started in the last issue but it is not an unwelcome one. The story by James Peaty sports a novel concept (i.e. place The Doctor in a 1950’s sci-fi thriller movie setting) and runs with it. The artwork by Life Sucks artist Warren Pleece suits the weird horror tone of the story and establishes the appropriate atmosphere. Fans of classic Americana horror would do well to check this out, as would fans of The Doctor!
Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor: Year Three #2 will be available for purchase on April 26, 2017 from your local comic book store (Don’t know where that is? Here you go.) or digitally via Comixology.com.
