Once upon a time Solomon Hitch was an ordinary freelance writer with a pretty good life. He had loyal friends, a gorgeous girlfriend who didn’t mind paying the bills until his writing career took off and a relatively steady gig with one publisher. Then Solomon became the target of a vampire, who had it in mind to turn slowly drain the life from him, bestowing the curse of vampirism and turning Solomon into his slave for all time!

Luckily, Solomon was saved by a passing necromancer before the process was complete. Unluckily, this necromancer was drunk, felt guilty he’d been unable to save Solomon’s life and in the mood to get creative. Channeling the power of the horror movie marathon Solomon had been watching, the necromancer restored him to a semblance of life and gave him the power to always come back from the dead, no matter what. Like Michael Myers Freddie Kruger and Jason Voorhees, Solomon will always come back to fight the forces of evil…. at least so long as Solomon continues to take a bite out of crime and turn his urge to devour the flesh of the living upon the monsters that plague Solar City, Texas.

Thus began the legend of Halloween Man. One of the most original superhero ideas in independent comics. Certainly one of the most entertaining and well-crafted series to ever be published as a web comic.  And hither comes Halloween Man: Superdeformed – a trade paperback collecting some long-lost Halloween Man stories from the halcyon days before Nicola Scott became a big name drawing Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman, David Baldeon before he became a big name drawing Domino and Marvel Zombies and Drew Edwards before he was named the Best Comic Creator in Austin by the Austin Chronicle.

Odds are if you’re a Halloween Man superfan, you’ve already seen most of the stories in this collection at some point in the past. Thankfully, there is a reason for you to pick up this collection regardless – it contains a reworked version of Halloween Man’s origin story with some updated elements taken from the expanded backstory in the web comics. And if you haven’t read all the stories in this collection before, well… now is your chance!

Halloween Man is bound to appeal to a wide variety of readers. Horror fans? This is right up your alley. Superheroes? The hero may be spooky, but he is all hero. Fans of referential humor?  Every story is full of as many knowing references as your average episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.  Dark humor? This book has Gail Simone’s seal of approval on the cover, so if you’re a fan of Domino or Birds of Prey, well, there’s one more reason to read this collection apart from the aforementioned Baldeon and Scott artwork.

Simply put, Halloween Man: Superdeformed is an obvious labor of love for all involved and a hell of a good read with great artwork to boot. If you still haven’t given Halloween Man a chance after all this time, this book is the perfect place to jump in, read the origin story and be introduced to the whole cast of characters.
