DOCTOR WHO: THE 13TH DOCTOR: YEAR TWO #1/ Story by JODY HOUSER/ Art by ROBERTA INGRANATA/ Colors by ENRICA ANGIOLINI/ Flattening by SHARI CHANKHAMMA/ Letters by RICHARD STARKINGS & COMICRAFT’S SARAH HEDRICKS/ Published by TITAN COMICS

It’s been some time since Yaz, Ryan and Graham first encountered The Doctor. Now more family than friends, they’ve traveled through time and space, helping the Doctor with helping others. But now they may find themselves helping The Doctor in a totally unexpected and new way.

They had meant to go on a quick trip to 1969 and allow Graham the chance to see Woodstock that he’d never had as a young man. While the quartet do wind up in 1969, they wind up on entirely the wrong side of The Pond. Worse yet, they wind up in a time and place that The Doctor cannot be without risking serious danger to the fabric of space and time.

Because back when The Doctor was still a bloke and traveling with a young medical student named Martha Jones, a relative millennia or so ago, they were sent back to 1969 without the benefit of a TARDIS, courtesy of The Weeping Angels – a species of psychic parasites that feast on the life energy of others, sending them back in time as they consume the potential future. Of course The Doctor eventually sorted things out and regained his TARDIS with the help of a woman named Sally Sparrow. But that hasn’t happened yet. And unbeknownst to everyone, The Weeping Angels are up and about in 1969 London as well.

Will The Doctor’s new friends be able to save the Tenth Doctor from this new menace without causing a paradox? Will anyone survive the latest rash of strange disappearances that is terrifying London? And most importantly… will any more Doctors show up to deal with this crisis?

Jody Hauser risks much with this premiere issue of Doctor Who: The 13th Doctor‘s second year. Not only is she building a story around one of the most popular Doctor Who stories of all time (Series 3’s Blink, if you didn’t know.) but she’s pairing the decidedly controversial 13th Doctor opposite the 10th Doctor; the most popular of the modern era. What might have seemed a cheap bid for fan service, however, turns out to be a brilliant little tale that doesn’t detract from the earlier story.

Hauser captures the voices of the characters from the show just as well as artist Roberta Ingranata captures the likenesses of the actors. The action of the issue flows smoothly under Ingranata’s pencils and the colors and finishes by Enrica Angiolini and Shari Shankhamma leave everything looking, as the 9th Doctor would say, “fantastic”. All in all, it seems that The Doctor is in good hands with this new creative team, as Titan Comics continues to deliver the goods in showcasing the adventures of The Doctor in comic book form. A must read for all fans of Doctor Who!

Doctor Who: The 13th Doctor: Year Two #1 will be available on January 8, 2020!
