THE WRONG EARTH: CONFIDENCE MEN #1/ Script by MARK WAID/ Art by LEONARD KIRK/ Colors by PAUL LITTLE/ Letters by ROB STEEN/ Published by AHOY COMICS
On Earth-Alpha, the noble Dragonflyman and his sidekick Stinger protect the their world from various colorful supervillains. Things are slightly different on the darker world of Earth-Omega, where Dragonfly and Stinger wage a war on crime and corruption using extreme justice. A twist of fate switched Dragonflyman with Dragonfly, to much confusion and hilarity. But that comes later…
Now, both dragonfly-themed heroes find their young partners facing a crisis of faith following a series of blunders. Both heroes must find a way to restore the confidence of their sidekicks and ready them for battle again. Naturally they both have different ideas about how that is best accomplished.
It should surprise no one that Mark Waid proves a good fit for writing both heroic duos depicted in The Wrong Earth. This is, after all, the same writer responsible for deconstructing Superman with Irredeemable and the Underworld Unleashed storyline that put dark spins on many classic DC Comics villains. As such, Waid perfectly captures the Silver Age sheen of Earth-Alpha and the darkness of Earth-Omega.
The artwork by Leonard Kirk manages the same careful balancing act. Kirk subtly shifts his style between the two stories, with heavy inks on the Earth-Omega segments. The colors by Paul Little complete the illusion, with a slightly brighter palette being utilized for the Earth-Alpha scenes.
If you haven’t taken a trip to The Wrong Earth yet, this issue is a good one to start with. Waid perfectly presents the setting and Kirk’s artwork is as amazing as ever. This continues to be one of the most underrated series on the shelves today.
The Wrong Earth: Confidence Men #1 releases on June 22, 2022.
