Since World War II, the state of California has depended upon prison labor to combat wildfires. The training is hard and the work is harder, but it offers many inmates a reduced sentence in exchange for risking their lives for society. It is a cruel irony that they are forbidden from seeking employment as fire-fighters once their time is served.

The five women on Crew 513 are well aware of the deck that is stacked against them. So when opportunity strikes in the middle of a blazing inferno, they’re ready to jump at the chance to acquire a stolen fortune left behind the line of fire. But in a world where trust is in short supply and yet a way of life, will they be able to survive?

Dark Spaces: Wildfire #1 is everything you’d expect from a collaboration between Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman. This first issue gives us a solid hook, as Snyder explores the real world issues behind California’s inmate fire-fighter program while setting the stage for an action-packed heist. Sherman’s artwork shows a similar level of intricate detail, with the phenomenal colors of Ronda Pattison providing the perfect finishing touches. With pun very much intended, I can safely say that this is the hottest original comic series you’ll see this summer.
