Jimmy Meadows is well on his way to becoming a rock legend. Unfortunately, like many musicians born of the 1960’s counter-culture, Jimmy is a heroin addict and has come damn close to dying young while living fast. The promise of a miracle treatment that can cure any addiction sends Jimmy into the jungles of South America, but the cure may prove worse than the disease for Jimmy and the entourage of opportunists that have formed around him.

I expected Breath of Darkness to be a rock-fueled rip-off of Heart of Darkness. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was something more. The script by Rich Douek does a fantastic job of introducing the ensemble cast and while most of them fall into neat tropes (the opportunist manager, the bedraggled academic, etc.) there are enough interesting hooks to make them distinctive and unique. The artwork by Alex Cormack is equally individualist, dark and disturbing as one could hope for. A must-read for all horror fans!

Breath of Darkness #1 releases in February 2023 from IDW Publishing.
