SECOND COMING: TRINITY #1 [Preview/Review]

SECOND COMING: TRINITY #1/ Script by MARK RUSSELL/ Layouts by RICHARD PACE/ Finishes by LEONARD KIRK/ Colors by ANDY TROY/ Letters by ROB STEEN/ Published by AHOY COMICS

The first volume of Second Coming was a revelation, drawing charges of blasphemy from people who would ban the Bible for being full of sex and violence had they ever bothered to read it. The follow up, Only Begotten Son, continued the satiric skewering of American culture, Superman comics, and the core idea of what happens when Jesus returns to Earth and becomes the roommate of an alien superhero. Now, there is a third series, appropriately titled Second Coming: Trinity, in which the hero Sunstar must consider, with a little help from Jesus, how much responsibility he has for escalating things with his arch-enemy, Cranius, after an encounter at their high school reunion.

If you enjoyed the first two Second Coming series, Second Coming: Trinity will offer more of the same quality comic content. Mark Russell is comics’ finest social commentator and his script here is a prime example of why that is so. The artwork by Richard Pace and Leonard Kirk is fantastic, and well backed by the colors of Andy Troy and Rob Steen. My only reservation in recommending Second Coming: Trinity is that you really should read the first two volumes first, though you could easily pick this book up and read it without having done so.

Second Coming: Trinity #1 arrives in comic shops on April 5, 2023.
