Jean McKnight is a disgraced journalist with little left to lose. Reduced to writing puff pieces for the one editor who will still work with her, she’s come to St. Augustine, Florida to write about the 450th anniversary of the founding of the first European colony in the United States. Also newly arrived to St. Augustine are teenager Cheyenne Collins and her mother, Rebecca, who are also seeking a fresh start.
Three different women, soon to be united in terror. For as the bodies start stacking up, a supernatural secret is unearthed that the people of St. Augustine would prefer to forget. Time will tell if the truth will be unveiled or if Jean, Cheyenne and Rebecca will be buried alongside it!
Good Deeds is the latest chapter in the Dark Spaces anthology series started by Scott Snyder. This chapter, penned by filmmaker/author Che Grayson, boasts an impressive hook, with interesting characters and a slow-boiling story. The effect is comparable to other horror anthologies, with The Twilight Zone being an apparent influence.
The artwork by Kelsey Ramsay merits similar praise, being vividly detailed. Ramsay is just as skilled at depicting the mundanity of life in Florida as they are the nightmarish teases of St. Augustine’s dark secrets. The colors by Ronda Pattison are also amazing.
Fans of the original Dark Spaces series would do well to check this out, as would lovers of horror in any form. This will be a book to keep an eye on.
Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1 releases on May 17th, 2023 from IDW.
