I am reluctant to say much about Unnatural Order #1. Much has already been said in the press leading up to it, regarding it being a genre-blending work of fiction. Having been given a chance to read the first two issues, I can say this is true. However, this first chapter is a masterful work of historic fiction, born of the same eclectic spirit as Robert E. Howard and Neil Gaiman. More than that I cannot say in summary.

I can say, without any sense of hyperbole, that I can see why Vault Comics is so confident that this series will be the next great fantasy series that they are giving the first issue away for free to realtors. Christopher Yost, whose writing I’ve enjoyed since the highly underrated Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes cartoon, has spun a winning story and created a number of memorable and likable heroes. The artwork by Val Rodrigues is vivid and vibrant, perfectly capturing the wild spirit of the setting. Backed by the colors of Dearbhla Kelly and the letters of Andworld Design, this book looks fantastic, with action that flows smoothly and memorable visuals throughout.

Unnatural Order is sure to hold a place of honor on the shelf of fantasy comic classics, next to The Sandman and Saga. Do not sleep on this book, readers. Grab the first issue as soon as your comic shop opens.

Unnatural Order #1 releases on November 1st, 2023.
