I LOVE APOCALYPTIC ZOMBIE MISFITS / Words by DOUG WAGNER / Art by DANIEL HILLYARD / Published by CLOVER PRESS
Once upon a time, Cecil Hankershank was a skinny nerd whose hobbies included metalsmithing and volunteering at the library. Then, apparently, he died and was reborn in the crazy buff-body of a serial killer. This is a problem for everyone except Cecil, as they were intending to resurrect and draft said serial killer into a team to save the Earth from total destruction.
“They” and said team consists of an angel in the body of a roller-derby superstar, an easily-annoyed skin-walker, a moonshine-running zombie now soul-bound to his truck, a psychic child whose prophecies are delivered in crayon, and a slew-load of murderous immortal chickens.
Oh. And society as Cecil knew it has collapsed. Yet that still isn’t stopping various eldritch forces from trying to destroy what is left of the Earth and humanity. No pressure, though.

Instruct a gaggle of teenagers with ADHD to mash-up Good Omens and Mad Max: Fury Road into an RPG and you might get something almost as loony and utterly awesome as I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits. I would be lying if I said this was a coherent comic. However, if I have read anything quite so creative or as wonderfully weird, all record of it has been blasted from my memory by the sheer awesomeness of this work.
There’s not much more I can say that the above 15 page preview does not. Long-time collaborators Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard have composed many great comics together and they play off of one another like the comic book equivalent of Lennon and McCartney. You will either grove along with this beat or you won’t. Yet I think I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits will hold broad appeal.
Beyond those who enjoy quirky comedies about unlikely anti-heroes, I Love Apocalyptic Zombie Misfits checks a lot of boxes. Dark Comedy. Horror. Isekai. Anything featuring weird precocious children. Den fans looking for another tale of a nerd turned muscle-man who really needs to find some pants. The whole gamut of the human experience, in other words.
Well, maybe not, but it made me laugh my ass off.
If you too could stand to lose some unsightly ass-flesh and the above preview made you laugh, you can head over to Kickstarter to be informed of when this comic will be available for purchase.
