Here at Kaboooooom we live and breathe comic books, but if you’re new to the game or just don’t frequent the local comic shop it can be hard to know where to start. For that, we’re here to help. Every week we’ll share with you our recommendations for what you should checking out and what you need to know before you crack that cover – it’s Kabooooom’s Pull List!
Sarah Moran, Comics Editor
Pull List: Batman Eternal #14, The Walking Dead #129, Captain Marvel #5
This Week’s Must Read: Lumberjanes #4
I’m fairly certain you already know how much I and other writers here love Lumberjanes, so why would I even bother making it my must read this week? It’s that gosh darn great of a series! Not often will you find a comic that can be read and enjoyed by adults and kids alike, but Lumberjanes is clever with its humor and storytelling. On top of that, you’d be hard-pressed to find a comic as diverse in its representation as Lumberjanes (multiple female characters, many of whom are non-white! Outrageous!).
Brooke Allen’s art continues to be absolutely charming, and while I may personally wish it was Noelle Stevenson’s art (cover artist and co-writer along with Grace Ellis) that made up the bulk of the issues, it’s basically like picking between two really awesome things – either way we win! And now that Lumberjanes is an ongoing title there’ll only be more of the awesome to enjoy.
Marcus Hammond, Writer
Pull List: New Suicide Squad #1, Superman/Wonder Woman #10, Shutter #4, Coffin Hill #9, Winter Soldier: Bitter March #5, Nightcrawler #4
This Week’s Must Read: Spider-Man 2099 #1
I’m a sucker for nostalgia. Spider-Man 2099 was one of my favorite 2099 titles back in the early 90’s. I was very excited when Miguel O’ Hara made his way into Superior Spider-Man and have been anticipating the return of a solo series. Marvel has been doing a lot with time travel lately, but I look forward to seeing how David constructs the character for today’s audience.
Matt Morrison, Writer
Pull List: All New Invaders #7, Batgirl #33, Black Dynamite #3
This Week’s Must Read: Injustice: Gods Among Us, Year Two #7
If you had told me two years ago I’d read a story based around Black Canary and Harley Quinn bonding over motherhood and the deaths of the men they loved – much less that I’d love that story – I’d have thought you (and the DC Universe) had gone mad. Well if this is mad, it is a beautiful madness and with Tom Taylor scripting there is a method to it. Proof that not every comic based on a video game is of inferior quality, I’d gladly take more books like this over the vast majority of DC Comics’ New 52 line.
Erik Radvon, Writer
Pull List: Armor Hunters #2, Rai #3, Spider-Man 2099 #1
This Week’s Must Read: Spread #1
Writer Justin Jordan of Luthor Strode and Dead Body Road fame kicks off his latest creator-owned series this week alongside artist Kyle Strahm and colorist Felipe Sobreiro. Based on preview pages, Spread looks like a cross between John Carpenter’s The Thing and Lone Wolf and Cub. Another exciting offbeat debut from Image.
