This Week’s Must Read: Princess Leia #1

Looking through my pull for this week and I’m delighted to find it’s absolutely dominated by kick-ass ladies. Sure, I decide what’s on my pull list so I’ve clearly orchestrated it this way, but it’s sure nice to have some many choices when looking for great heroines. This week’s must read, however? Of course that honor goes to Princess Leia #1 from Mark Waid and Terry Dodson. Star Wars‘ only leading lady (for many, many years) has earned herself a prominent position in this new line and I have very high hopes for how Waid and Dodson will develop her in the aftermath of Episode IV. In particular, how she picks up her life after her entire planet is destroyed and continues to lead the rebellion, because that’s never addressed in the films.

This Week’s Must Read: Lady Killer #3

While I’m looking forward to several titles this week, Lady Killer has proven in the first two issues that it’s consistently good. Josie has her flaws, but also gets to escape reality by doing something that she enjoys. Don’t we all fantasize about doing something that makes us completely, utterly happy, while still maintaining our obligations to those around us? For me, that “living the fantasy” aspect of this series makes Josie one of the most intriguing characters in comics right now.

This Week’s Must Read: Descender #1

It’s a big week for Jeff Lemire fans, as the former Green Arrow writer takes over Hawkeye and releases his latest science-fiction story, Descender. Ultimately, I’ve decided to pick this over All New Hawkeye #1 simply because it promises to offer us something new and unusual in the same vein as Lemire’s Trillium.
