Here at Kaboooooom we live and breathe comic books, but if you’re new to the game or just don’t frequent the local comic shop it can be hard to know where to start. For that, we’re here to help. Every week we’ll share with you our recommendations for what you should be checking out and what you need to know before you crack that cover – it’s Kabooooom’s Pull List!
Sarah Moran, Editor
Pull List: Lumberjanes Vol. 1, Harley Quinn #16, Spider-Gwen #3, Kanan Last Padawan #1
This Week’s Must Read: Rick & Morty #1
It’s becoming more common for popular cartoons to spawn their own comic book series. Case in point: Adventure Time, My Little Pony, and even my Must Read from last week, Jem and The Holograms. This week sees another cartoon getting its own tie-in comic from Oni Press – Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty. Now, if you’ve never seen Rick and Morty, this comic probably isn’t for you. (If you’d like, you can check out episodes on Adult Swim’s site. Though I’ll warn you that this series isn’t for the easily offended.) Fans of the weirder than weird ‘toon, however, should definitely plan on picking this up. Writer Zac Gorman and artists CJ Cannon and Ryan Hill appear to have perfectly captured Rick and Morty‘s bonkers tone and style, and I can’t think of a better way to spend your time until creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harman can deliver season 2!
Marcus Hammond, Writer
Pull List: Amazing Spider-Man #17, Avengers #43, Convergence #0, Feathers #4, Harley Quinn #16, Lady Killer #4, Spider-Gwen #3, Uncanny Avengers #3
This Week’s Must Read: Dying and the Dead #2
It seems like it’s been awhile since the first issue of Dying and the Dead came out. The first issue was intriguing as it combined murder, mystery, and a little science fiction. That intrigue is strong enough to get me to go re-read issue #1 and get ready for this new issue. Knowing Jonathan Hickman, there will be even more mystery and philosophizing and Ryan Bodenheim’s art is always amazing.
Matt Morrison, Writer
Pull List: Arrow: Season 2.5 #16 (Digital), Convergence #0, Rick and Morty #1, Robert E. Howard’s Savage Sword #10
This Week’s Must Read: Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor #1
Alas, this is but a mini-series rather than a monthly one. Perhaps Titan Comics despaired at capturing the sheer awesomeness that was The Ninth Doctor on a monthly basis for an extended period? A task that, on consideration, becomes even more difficult when this series also features Rose Tyler and Captain Jack Harkness during their brief time together on the TARDIS with The Doctor, before the events of “Boom Town.” I don’t know. But I am certain that this series will be… fantastic!
Tiffany Belieu, Writer
Pull List: Gotham Academy Endgame #1, My Little Pony FIENDship is Magic #1: Sombra, Lady Killer #4.
This Week’s Must Read: Lumberjanes Vol. 1
Since its premiere in April of 2014, the single issues of Lumberjanes have been particularly hard to get your hands on in my town. I am a big fan of lady-friendships and this comic has it in abundance. Now that the first four volumes have been collected I finally get my chance to enjoy BOOM! Studio’s camp adventure.
