This Week’s Must Read: Convergence: Batgirl #1

Honestly, I didn’t want to read any of these Convergence titles. Event series are usually more trouble than their worth, serving only to interrupt a run you’ve been enjoying with bad stories you have zero interest in. Yet, I’m also still pretty sore over the New 52’s erasure of Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain. I know they’ve come back (sort of) but I’ve never really got over the stupid 4-1 ratio of Robins to Batgirls. Here we have a series with two Batgirls, and on principle I’ve got to support it. Let’s hope it’s a worthwhile adventure to boot.

This Week’s Must Read: Descender #2

I really enjoyed the first issue of Descender. Jeff Lemire is taking his world-building skills to a new level with this series as he creates a panicked galaxy bent on revenge. Lemire calls on the right bits and piece of mythology, science, and fiction to create a landscape where technology is feared and one little, clueless android has to survive.  It’s an underdog story mixed with questionable bounty hunters, stuffy scientist,s and some giant, Celestial-like destroyers. I can’t wait to see how Lemire and Dustin Nguyen construct issue #2.

This Week’s Must Read: Convergence: Nightwing/Oracle #1

The first issue of Convergence left me flat and I really don’t care for most of the proposed one-shot comics tied in to the storyline – much as I’d love to see the Stephanie Brown Batgirl or the real Harley Quinn again. And yet… well, let’s be honest. I am a total Gail Simone fanboy and will give anything she writes a try. And I’m a Barbara Gordon/Dick Grayson shipper, as the kids say. So even though I’m skipping most of the epic crossover for the next two months… I have to see this one!

This Week’s Must Read: Rat Queens #10

Rat Queens is by far my current favorite book. Who wouldn’t love a story about some foul-mouthed, ass-kicking ladies with no apologies? When the run went on hiatus for some unfortunate reasons I was sincerely experiencing withdrawals. I’m glad the girls are back with regularity and being treated well by the fabulous art of Stjepan Sejic.

This Week’s Must Read: Convergence: The Question #1

Nobody writes Renee Montoya like Greg Rucka. As co-writer of Gotham Central, Rucka turned this GCPD background character into a three-dimensional woman who struggled with issues of sexual identity, religious guilt and familial conflict. Rucka made Montoya a key part of DC’s excellent 52 weekly series, wherein the former detective adopted the mantle of Vic Sage, the Question. Since then, the character hasn’t been nearly as well served (on the Gotham TV show, she’s basically relegated to the role of “vindictive lesbian”), so it’s refreshing that the writer who knows Montoya best is back, if only for two issues. As an added bonus, Convergence: The Question is penciled by the massively-underrated Cully Hamner, who previously teamed with Rucka on a Montoya/Question backup in Detective Comics.
