Texas Frightmare Weekend: Pre-Show Report

This weekend is shaping up to be a big one for geeks and freaks everywhere. The long-awaited sequel to The AvengersAge of Ultron, releases this Friday and the early reviews suggest it will be even better than expected.  This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day and comic shops around the world will be holding special events, including autograph signings and costume contests, while giving out free books. And in Dallas, one of our local conventions will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with its biggest show yet.

Annually held on the first weekend in May, Texas Frightmare Weekend has grown rapidly from humble beginnings to become the largest horror-themed convention held in the American Southwest. Stretching over three days, TFW hosts celebrity appearances, autograph signings and film screenings. George A. Romero, Clive Barker and John Carpenter are just some of the luminaries who have appeared as guests.

This reporter must confess a personal fondness for TFW, having appeared there as a performer in previous years. I was fortunate enough to be part of Amber Does Dallas – a shadowcast troupe that performs The Rocky Horror Picture Show and REPO! The Genetic Opera. Some of my fondest convention memories involve performing before Magenta herself, Patricia Quinn, and actor/musician Nivek Ogre.

This year’s Texas Frightmare Weekend promises to be equally impressive, with a selection of guests including Scream stars Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich in their convention appearance debuts. Other guests include the legendary Malcolm McDowell, Academy Award nominee Brad Dourif, Walking Dead actress Alexandra Breckenridge and The Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira!

Texas Frightmare Weekend is May 1-3 at the Hyatt Regency DFW. Tickets are available at the door, with day passes for $30 and weekend passes for $75.
