Here at Kaboooooom we love our comic books, but if you’re new to the game or just don’t frequent the local comic shop, it can be hard to know where to start. For that, we’re here to help. Every week we’ll share with you our recommendations for what you should be checking out and what you need to know before you crack that cover – it’s Kabooooom’s Pull List!
Pull List: Starfire #8, The Walking Dead #150, The Mighty Thor #3
This Week’s Must Read: The Legend of Wonder Woman #1 (of 9)
When the New 52 began back in 2011 (wow, how the years have flown!) Wonder Woman was given a revamp courtesy of Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. Thanks to Chiang, she looked amazing, pants or no pants. Azarello’s version of the Amazons and their princess was also pretty good. Not my favorite, but not terrible by any stretch. Then came the most recent run of Wonder Woman under David and Meredith Finch, practically undoing all of Azzarello and Chiang’s good work – especially that new costume, yuck!
This brings us to The Legend of Wonder Woman by Renae de Liz and Ray Dillon, a digital series beginning its print run tomorrow. It’s a more back to basics story for Wondy and I couldn’t be more excited. If you’ve enjoyed Wondy’s other digital series, Sensation Comics, then you better be picking up this one, too. The main Wonder Woman series may be a total wreck, but DC keeps the Amazon true to character in at least a few places – Legend of Wonder Woman should be one of them.
Pull List: All New Wolverine #4, Batman/Superman #28, Captain America: Sam Wilson #5, Constantine The Hellblazer #8, Descender #9, Doctor Who: The Eighth Doctor #3, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Five #4 (Digital), Knights Of The Dinner Table #227, Leaving Megapolis: Surviving Megapolis #1, Red Sonja #1
This Week’s Must Read: Green Lantern Corps: Age of Oblivion #1
I’m spoiled for choice this week. Between Red Sonja returning in a new volume, the sequel to Gail Simone’s super-powered zombie dystopia Leaving Megapolis, and three Tom Taylor books amid all of the other wonderful things coming out this week, I’m hard pressed to pick one thing as the book I’m most looking forward to reading. But if I must – and I must – I have to go with Green Lantern Corps: Age of Oblivion.
I dropped Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps a while back after it became apparent there was no way to enjoy those titles without picking up the entirety of the Green Lantern line. Even with the line reduced to one monthly book, I still haven’t seen fit to return. But with Tom Taylor writing and Ethan Van Sciver on art duties, I’m thinking it’s high time I see what’s going on now in the GLC.
Pull List: Gotham Academy #14, Lucifer #1 (Special Edition), Legend of Wonder Woman #1, Robin War #2
This Week’s Must Read: Gutter Magic #1
I can’t lie, I have something of a soft spot for historical fiction. Especially historical fiction that is able to weave in, shall we say, less conventional elements to an already familiar story. So when I read that IDW was publishing a series where World War II was fought with magic–I couldn’t help my curiosity in new series. In what appears to be a pulp influenced story of a guy clawing his way through a modern New York City’s realm of sorcery, Cinder Byrnes first needs to confront a notorious crime boss who is gunning for him. For these reasons and to support a new series, Gutter Magic is my must read title for the week.
