Ready to see Rick and Morty have an adventure in Atlantis?

Seriously. There’s no way to talk about this episode without discussing major spoilers for the series as a whole.

We can tell you that there is a bit about mermaid sex.

As in sexual congress with mermaids.

Not a discussion of mermaid gender issues.

Despite this, there’s no revelations about the mechanics of mermaid sex.

Like how human sex organs could work within the context of the lower part of a fish?

There’s no “Slot B” for “Tab A” if you take our meaning.

Anyway, The Ricklantis Mixup is a good episode but there’s no way to discuss it without SPOILERS!

So consider this your SPOILER WARNING! No reading after the image if you wish to remain unspoiled.

Usually the continuity between Rick and Morty episodes is fairly loose and one can watch an episode without worrying about missing an important reference to something that came before. The Ricklantis Mixup proves to be something different, establishing an on-going story-line involving the newly reformed Citadel of Ricks (a pocket dimension populated entirely by Ricks and Morties from all across reality) and ideas that were floated way back in Season One when the Citadel of Ricks first appeared. There’s a lot of dressing around the revelations, however, including some effective parodies of Training Day and Stand By Me. There’s also a Willy Wonka Rick variant, who I fully expect to see cosplayed within the month.

Justin Roiland is at the peak of his powers as a voice actor here, playing multiple variations on Rick and Morty yet finding subtle ways to change the infections here and there. One of the best scenes in the episodes involves a cynical cop Morty talking to two gang-member Morties, and the cop adopting the phrase “Aww… geez” as if it were slang to blend in, even while sounding distinct yet similar to the other Morties.

We may have been denied a trip to Atlantis, but we still got a solid episode of Rick and Morty. It may be impossible to describe, but The Ricklantis Mixup is an enjoyable experience. If you’re really heartbroken about this, consider watching the new Duck Tales pilot, which does feature an actual trip to Atlantis.
