Lucifer Season 6 took everyone by surprise, including the showrunners. They had planned to end the show with season 5 and Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) ascending the throne of Heaven after finally admitting his love for Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and risking his immortality for her. That’s still the plan as Lucifer Season 6 opens, but Lucifer’s final days on Earth become complicated by the arrival of an angel named Rory (Brianna Hildebrand) whom he has never seen before.
It is fair to say that Lucifer does address the final fates of its characters well enough, though not everyone gets a satisfying journey to their eventual ends. Mazikeen (Lesley Ann Brandt) has surprisingly little to do throughout the season and the subplot centered around Linda (Rachael Harris) and her efforts to write a book about being the Devil’s therapist doesn’t really go anywhere after her research is utilized to help solve a mystery. Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) also doesn’t get much to do after a single episode devoted to his efforts to become an LAPD beat cop. And Chloe is, as always, there to be Lucifer’s foil and little else.
Surprisingly, it’s Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) who seems to fare the best, after having little to do in Season 5. While her storyline is perhaps the most mundane, she does get perhaps the best measure of how much Lucifer respected her before he leaves the Earth behind him. Dan the Douche (Kevin Alejandro) also has a strong storyline, centered around his return to Earth from Hell while he tries to work out his guilt and climb the stairway to Heaven.
This may seem like a savage indictment, but the fact of the matter is that there are some great moments in Lucifer season 6. Unfortunately, the gold (such as the long-awaited animated episode by the same team responsible for Harley Quinn) is mixed in with a lot of dross and while the ending is satisfactory, it is not entirely pleasing. It could have been far worse, but it could have been so much better and it doesn’t seem likely that any episode from this season will be making anyone’s Top Ten list.
