This Week’s Must Read: Detective Comics #941

I’m glad I picked up last week’s Batman and Nightwing (two series I’m not currently reading) because parts one and two of “Night of the Monster Men” were pretty excellent, and now I can continue the tale in this week’s Detective Comics. Yes, crossovers can be a pain for just that reason, but at least in this case the story being told is unlike anything I’ve read from a Batman story before. For one, I can’t recall anytime that Batman has fought against giant Kaiju monsters, so that’s unique, and in the wake of Red Robin’s “death”, Batman is being even more protective of his many charges (which is kind of cute, actually).

Though trying to keep everyone out of harm’s way isn’t necessarily the most effective way to stop these rampaging monsters, something which Batwoman reminds him of repeatedly. And for me, their growing rapport has been the real treat of Tynion’s run on Detective Comics. Two cousins who came to their callings for different reasons and by different means, yet both committed to keeping Gotham and its citizens safe. It’s an interesting dichotomy, and I’m loving how it’s unfolding.

This Week’s Must Read: Leaving Megalopolis: Surviving Megalopolis #6

I helped to Kickstart the original Leaving Megalopolis graphic novel and considered it money well spent. Jim Calafiore’s artwork was amazing and the script was one of the most gleefully twisted things Gail Simone has ever written. This follow-up series, published by Dark Horse Comics, has proven every bit as good as the original book and I can’t wait to see how this one ends.
